Speaker will be Scott Barron from Disability Rights California. He will give a presentation on the Office of Clients Rights Advocacy and what their role is within Disability Rights California. The presentation is called, “What is OCRA?”
After spending four years with DDPSAU in December 2013, I became a part of the Office of Clients’ Rights Advocacy as a Peer Advocate. Some of my job duties include providing a variety of self-advocacy trainings, materials development and individual advocacy. Some ways I’ve assisted OCRA staff has been by meeting with clients in order to gather information to understand the client’s needs. In addition, I can assist in prepping individuals for their IPP meetings by creating agendas and building their confidence or skills so they can advocate for themselves more effectively.
I’ve also served on numerous internal and external committees providing feedback. An example is the OCRA training committee and the Non-Discrimination impact team and various city and county voting rights committees. I am available to join in on any outreach or training activity your office has scheduled, IPP preparation, direct representation or attend your office case-review to offer insight and possibly help you troubleshoot and approach difficult cases from a different point of view. Moreover, I can co-counsel to assist individual clients with any Southern California CRA or ACRA. In this role I feel I provide a unique perspective and often times I gather vital information to strengthen the clients’ self-advocacy skills or the CRA’s case. I advocate, educate and articulate for individual rights.
